You guys. You will never guess what happened to me. I went on vacation with a friend for a week, and while I was gone, the Five-Percent Fairies came to my house and finished the buffet.
They DO exist!Continue Reading
Some of you may be aware that I have a history of making BOLD, INNOVATIVE, ORIGINAL color choices for the walls around here. Well, I’ve done it again. After speaking with our real estate agent and being told that taupe was the new hot neutral, I thought,”Whaaaaaa? Nope. Ugh. Taupe is lame.”
I mean, come on. Taupe? Neutral, yes. Hot, no. Beige was the color to beat in the early 90’s. Changing the name to “taupe” isn’t going to fool anyone. C’mon, trendsetters. Try harder. Right?Continue Reading
Hey! Anyone else out there like dramatic before-and-afters??
Oh hey there, dining room, you look nice today. Is that 4 coats of paint you’re wearing?Continue Reading
A couple of weeks ago, my best frenemy said to me, “You know, is it really still ‘Sarah’s Big Idea’? It seems like you only ever do little stuff now.”
Frenemies are the worst. You can spend months or even years unconsciously tuning out everything they say, and then one day, BAM! A single sentence suddenly penetrates your frenemy fog and you are like, well, damn. He is right. I am a pathetic shell of my former glorious self.
You know what it is? I don’t give two shits about the woodwork.
There, I said it.Continue Reading
Let me just start by saying, thank you.
Thank you to all of you for still being here. Thank you to the anonymous hundreds that Google Analytics reports to me. Thank you to the people that like or comment on Facebook. And thank you especially to those of you who took the time to write such thoughtful, supportive things in the comments of my last post. It is hard to overstate the restorative power of kind words, particularly when they come from people you’ve never met.
Would it make things awkward between us if I told you that you really touched me?
Okay. Sorry about that.
Moving on! Remember that time I thought I was on a boat?
When we last chatted, I had set a goal for myself: fix the drywall and get the painting done so I would have some visible progress to show you this time. So I buckled down for a couple of days and got the drywall done, leaving me nearly a week to put on 2 coats of paint. That’s maybe 5 hours worth of work. Out of 168 possible hours.
I got it half done.
But that’s okay! Because from where you guys are sitting, on the other side of the screen, one coat of paint looks almost exactly like two, so I can show you the “after” pictures before the project is actually done!
Ahh, the magic of the internet.Continue Reading
Get ready for a post full of the most perfectly Pinterest-y pictures I could manage! Ladies and Gentlemen…I present to you…the greatest rock and roll-inspired music room in the history of cheap DIY makeovers (if only because the competition is pretty minimal)…THE BOOM BOOM ROOM!!!
I’ve been stripping doors again.
That’s right — less than one year after I found myself in the fetal position, crying and swearing that I would never again strip another door, I have somehow managed to strip and refinish the doors in The Boom Boom Room. And that means that today’s rock-and-roll inspiration comes from The Allman Brothers.
Because lord, I just can’t refinish another door.Continue Reading
I painted the carpet in The Boom Boom Room!
That’s not a euphemism.
You know, this may surprise some of you, but when you tell people that you are going to paint a carpet, the most common reaction is a mixture of doubt and disbelief, with a little bit of “I’m not sure I heard that correctly” thrown in for good measure.
Of course, there are some of you that would be like, “Of COURSE you’re going to paint the carpet! Because it will look TOTALLY RAD!!”
You people — the people who think that — you get it. You are my people. Because it looks totally freakin’ rad.
There are two things we need to address today. 1) This wall, which I left unpainted last time.
And 2) Today’s rock-and-roll inspiration: the 1973 album from progressive rock band Pink Floyd. Side note: my favorite song off the album? Money.
