Get ready for a post full of the most perfectly Pinterest-y pictures I could manage! Ladies and Gentlemen…I present to you…the greatest rock and roll-inspired music room in the history of cheap DIY makeovers (if only because the competition is pretty minimal)…THE BOOM BOOM ROOM!!!
It’s been a long time, been a long time, been a long lonely lonely lonely lonely lonely time —
— well, maybe not that lonely. I had company. Sometimes. But it has been a pretty damn long time, considering that I first hatched this plan over a year ago, when I came up with the idea for The Plywood Desk.
I made that desk last January, then went back to trying to wrap up The Longest Kitchen Remodel Ever. And the desk sat, and got covered with stuff and forgotten.
So I guess you could say, it’s been a long lonely time for the desk. (Har har.) But one magical day, I finally finished the kitchen and was allowed to take on a new project. So I turned my attention back to the idea of giving this totally rad desk an equally rad habitat to dwell in.
First step to total radness: removing the popcorn ceiling. Because no room in the history of Awesome Rooms of Any Kind has ever had popcorn ceilings.
Then I painted everything white. Partly because I knew there was going to be a lot of stuff in this room, and I wanted a clean background, so it wouldn’t feel too busy or cluttered. But partly it might have just been overcorrection for all the green.
Whatever my reasons were, at some point I realized that an entirely white room might be kinda boring, so I painted one wall really dark blue.
Which brings us down to ground-level: the nasty carpet. Lacking the funds to replace it, but refusing to simply LIVE with it like a normal person, I decided to paint the carpet.
In the category of The Most Tedious Projects I’ve Ever Done, this painted carpet thing ranks #4. It’s easily competing with such heavyweights as 1) re-creating original millwork by hand, 2) removing popcorn ceiling, and 3) an 18-month-long kitchen remodel.
I mean, it turned out awesome, so I don’t blame you if you want to try it. I’m just sayin’…you know, do with that information what you will.
Anyway, I know it’s tough to tear your eyes away from the absolute raditude of The Painted Carpet, but if I could direct your attention back to the ceiling for just a moment, you’ll see the project that I believe is my crowning achievement in this room: The Microphone Chandelier.
It’s a chandelier. Made of microphones. ‘Nuff said, amiright?
With the room properly lighted, I had the satisfaction of being able to move the desk and its matching plywood shelves into their new home. Installing the shelves gave me the space I needed to move in the rest of the furniture and start organizing and decorating. And then there were only two projects left: wrapping the piano in leather (also upholstering the piano bench, but that just counts as part of the piano project, right?)
and — because what’s the point of a Boom Boom Room without an abundance of leather? — upholstering the storage chest.
Which brings us to today. And the obligatory parade of Pinterest-y pictures.
And now that The Boom Boom Room is officially finished, there is only one thing left to say:
For those about to rock…
